Beto O’Rourke leads Joe Biden in 2020 straw poll

Beto O’Rourke leads a crowded field of potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, according to an informal poll conducted by a liberal political action committee.

But the defeated 2018 Texas Democratic Senate candidate was less than 1 percentage point ahead of his closest possible rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, the straw poll released by MoveOn Tuesday found.

While O’Rourke and Biden garnered 15.6 percent and 14.95 percent support respectively among those MoveOn members surveyed online, a plurality wouldn’t vote for any of the prospects suggested by the organization or didn’t know yet for whom they would cast a ballot.

The top 10 picks were rounded out by Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., as well as former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

MoveOn, established in 1998 to oppose impeachment proceedings against former President Bill Clinton, offers an important endorsement for Democrats seeking the party’s nomination in 2020 given its extensive network of liberal activists based around the country. The organization endorsed Sanders in 2016.
