Adios — for now

RICHMOND — It’s official.

The General Assembly has wrapped up amendments to the state’s two-year, $80 billion budget — both Houses approved the fixes unanimously — and adjourned on Sunday, only a day late.

Despite the accord, negotiations were still tenuous as late as Saturday, with chatter surfacing from some legislators of simply adjourning and reverting to the previously adopted two-year budget without amending it.

But Gov. Bob McDonnell said Sunday he’s been extremely clear that such a scenario was “100 percent unacceptable.”

“I did express that again last night when some were waving that flag – not many – that that would be [an] unacceptable result and would lead to me immediately calling a special session to continue to work on the budget,” he said.

Lawmakers did, in fact, reconvene in a special session Sunday for re-drawing the state’s House and Senate district lines, and then recessed.
