Nearly a quarter of all American children live with only one parent in their home, according to a recent study.
New data from Pew Research Center showed the United States has the world’s highest rate of children living in single-parent households.
“For decades, the share of U.S. children living with a single parent has been rising, accompanied by a decline in marriage rates and a rise in births outside of marriage,” the report stated.
Around 23% of children in America live with only one parent, compared to a worldwide average of around 7%. Three percent of children in China, 4% of children in Nigeria, and 5% of children in India live in single-parent households, the study said.
To explain the stark contrast in household sizes, Pew pointed to a number of factors, including economic well-being and a difference in living arrangements among older adults in the U.S.
