OGDENSBURG, N.Y. (AP) — Lake sturgeon restoration efforts continue in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation released about 6,500 fingerling sturgeon into the waterways in early September. Young sturgeon were also released earlier in the summer.
The restoration effort is a collaboration between DEC, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, the New York Power Authority and the U.S. Geological Survey.
The sturgeon are reared at the DEC hatchery at Oneida Lake and the Fish and Wildlife hatchery in Wisconsin.
One of the signs of program success is mature fish seen in spawning locations in Oneida Lake and the Oswegatchie River. Small fish have been collected from Oneida Lake that were naturally spawned.
