Board pushes online worker residency checks

Prince William supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved a directive to implement the federal E-Verify system in the county. E-Verify is an online system that verifies the residency status of new employees.

It would affect county contractors, as well as new county employees, Board Chairman Corey Stewart said. The system would be implemented within 120 days after the current deadline set for federal contractors, which is May 21.

Stewart said that because the county has made an effort to focus on the economy, the board wanted to make sure that county jobs were filled by legal residents.
