A 21-year-old man was struck and killed by a CSX freight train traveling through Waldorf late Saturday afternoon, according to officials at the Charles County Sheriff’s office.
Dangelo Harris was lying on tracks near Acton Lane when the train operator spotted him at about 5:00 p.m., according to Capt. Rob Cleaveland, spokesman for the sheriff’s department. The operator tried to brake the train but could not stop it in time, Cleaveland said. Harris was declared dead at the scene. No one else was injured in the incident.
Harris’ family told investigators that he had recently become homeless. A criminal investigation is underway to determine why Harris was on the tracks, but Cleaveland said there were no signs of foul play.
