PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A report for the General Assembly says a new parking garage proposed near a downtown Providence courthouse would cost $43 million to build, or approximately $31,000 per spot.
The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1nKjmHg ) the report is being given Wednesday to a special legislative commission studying the feasibility of building a garage next to the Garrahy Judicial Complex.
The report says the garage would be seven levels and have 1,250 parking spaces, plus room for shops. It estimates it would lose money for the first seven years then become moderately profitable in its first decade.
Supporters of building a garage say it could provide parking spaces for the courthouse and for the new developments on now-vacant land freed up when Interstate 195 was moved.
