Another attack ad highlights Kaine-Obama friendship

Republicans continued to pummel Virginia Senate candidate Tim Kaine for his connections to President Obama with their latest attack.

The National Republican Senate Committee released a web video Monday to mark the third “anniversary” of Kaine’s ascension to Democratic National Committee chairman. The 45-second spot, titled “Obama & Kaine: One And The Same,” traces the former Virginia governor’s support of Obama from the 2008 campaign trail to recent remarks that Kaine “isn’t going to run distancing myself from the president.”

“Whether it was ObamaCare, the failed stimulus, or the Democrats’ reckless spending spree, Tim Kaine has consistently stood with President Obama, instead of standing up for Virginia families and small businesses,” NRSC spokesman Brian Walsh said.

For his part, Kaine hasn’t shirked the link to Obama and so far it hasn’t hurt his poll numbers. The Democrat is in a virtual dead heat with likely Republican nominee George Allen, also a former governor and a one-time U.S. Senator.

Allen has employed a similar strategy, often linking Kaine to the president’s position on national issues. Kaine, conversely, has tied Allen to President Bush-era Republicans whose policies, he said, led to today’s record budget deficits and the recession.

Responding to the attacks, Kaine’s campaign said: “It’s too bad Republicans have to work this hard to fabricate differences between the candidates when, on plenty of issues that actually matter to Virginians, there are significant differences. For example, this month also marks the anniversary of George Allen entering the Senate, beginning his record of big federal spending, turning a record surplus into a record deficit, and helping to pave the way for our economic collapse.”
