Virginia resident Maria Chicas received the gift of a lifetime just days before Valentine’s Day. To her surprise, her husband gave her a winning $10 million lottery ticket.
He bought the ticket at an In & Out Mart located at 9103 Mathis Avenue in Manassas, Virginia. When he realized the ticket was a winner, he gifted it to Chicas.
“I thought he was joking!” she told the Lottery officials validating her winning ticket.

Chicas had the choice to receive the full $10 million over 30 years or a one-time payment of $6,570,302 in cash before taxes. In addition, the store that sold the winning ticket received $50,000.

The Virginia Lottery has been around since 1987. Every day, over $2 million is garnered to go toward Virginia’s K-12 public schools. In the fiscal year ending at the end of June 2021 alone, the lottery earned $765 million in funding.
