NFL looks to Texas for possible Super Bowl LVI replacement venue

The National Football League is looking outside of California to find a replacement venue for Super Bowl LVI.

This year’s Super Bowl is scheduled to be played at SoFi Stadium outside of Los Angeles, but COVID-19 restrictions in California could present severe challenges for the NFL and its ability to host the big game.

One potential venue is Arlington, Texas, the home of the Dallas Cowboys and AT&T Stadium, according to a report.

“The league did inquire about a date if [the] stadium is available. But that’s all I’ve ever heard. They could be just covering all options just in case,” a spokesperson for the Cowboys said.

A spokesman for the NFL confirmed that the league is looking into viable replacement locales, which he said occurs every year.

“We plan on playing Super Bowl LVI as scheduled at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday, Feb. 13,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said.

“As part of our standard contingency planning process that we conduct for all regular and postseason games, we have contacted several clubs to inquire about stadium availability in the event we cannot play the Super Bowl as scheduled due to weather-related issues or unforeseen circumstances,” he said. “Our planning process for the Super Bowl in Los Angeles is ahead of schedule, and we look forward to hosting the Super Bowl there to culminate another fantastic NFL season for our fans and clubs.”

Roughly 10,000 new COVID-19 cases were discovered on Christmas Eve in Los Angeles County, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has mandated that all visitors 5 years of age and up either show proof of vaccination or present a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering theme parks, local ABC affiliate WFAA reported.

With the omicron variant causing case numbers to spike in California, there is a growing concern that restrictions in the Golden State could be elevated with the Super Bowl weeks away.

AT&T Stadium presents the NFL with an option in a state with far fewer restrictions and a venue that led the league in attendance for 2021.
