Police accused of ‘brutal’ assault of man in his home after car chase

A video showing a violent confrontation between Tennessee police and a man in his home has gone viral on social media.

The incident caught on camera took place Saturday evening, when Brandon Calloway, a 25-year-old black man, failed to stop at a stop sign and drove 32 mph in a 20 mph zone. When officers tried to pull him over, he refused to stop and instead drove half a mile to his home, according to Oakland police.

The footage from the viral video, posted to social media by Calloway’s sister, shows officers chasing Calloway through his house, appearing to strike him with batons and stun him. His sister accused Oakland police officers of racially profiling her brother in the viral Facebook post, according to Fox 13.

“Brandon was assaulted in a brutal fashion,” Calloway’s attorney, Andre Wharton, told WREG. “I describe it as animalistic. The pictures are horrific. He’s fortunate to be here to stand up and express through his presence here he wants to see some accountability. Definitely would support some form of punishment up to termination. What Oakland sees is sufficient. It’s going to be up to them to send a message that says we don’t condone this.“

A woman heard in the footage asks officers repeatedly to “stop” and to “stop hitting him” as officers were chasing Calloway and asks Calloway to “stop resisting” and to “get on the ground” once officers caught him, according to the footage’s audio. At least four officers, one of whom was black, were present in the home when Calloway was arrested.

Calloway was charged with evading arrest, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and speeding, according to an affidavit recovered by WREG. Wharton is calling for all agencies to release any footage to the public, the outlet reported.

The Oakland Police Department is looking into what happened, Chief Chris Earl told Fox 13.

Ed Calloway, Brandon Calloway’s father, told the outlet his son is “a college graduate” who has “never been in trouble.”

“Personality-wise, he’s a very independent-minded person,” Ed Calloway said. “Just likes to enjoy life, energetic, very positive guy.”
