Los Angeles mayor returns to US following overseas quarantine

The fully vaccinated mayor of Los Angeles has returned home from Scotland after being forced to quarantine overseas for catching COVID-19.

Mayor Eric Garcetti, who went to Glasgow to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference earlier this month, made his way home to Los Angeles Wednesday, two weeks after it was revealed he tested positive for COVID-19. Garcetti, who received two shots of the Moderna vaccine, said the vaccine probably helped him fully recover from the virus, according to the Associated Press.

Garcetti announced he tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 3. His symptoms in quarantine consisted of a mild fever for one day, followed by flu-like symptoms and losing his sense of taste and smell for a few days, the outlet reported.

The mayor said he had put off getting a booster shot while in Glasgow but that he now “can’t wait” to get a third shot. He also encouraged Los Angeles residents to get vaccinated to keep COVID-19 case numbers and hospitalizations down, especially with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says COVID-19 vaccines may not be “100% effective at preventing illness” but stresses the “risk of infection, hospitalization, and death are all much lower in vaccinated people compared to unvaccinated.”

Los Angeles enacted a vaccine mandate on Nov. 8 that requires residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if they wish to access indoor areas, including gyms, movie theaters, spas, barbershops, restaurants, and coffee shops.
