President Trump told Kim Kardashian West in a meeting in the Oval Office last week that she and her husband, rapper Kanye West, were helping boost his popularity among black voters, a new report Monday said.
Kardashian West met with White House adviser and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on Wednesday to discuss prison reform. She also asked Trump to grant clemency to Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman serving a life sentence without parole for a nonviolent drug offense.
A person familiar with the Oval Office meeting told Bloomberg that Trump didn’t express much interest in Kardashian West’s request. Instead, a day after their meeting, Trump unexpectedly pardoned conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza and said he’s also considering a pardon for celebrity Martha Stewart and commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Trump has made no public mention of Johnson since his meeting with Kardashian West.
The meeting between the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star and the president came weeks after Kanye West stirred controversy with his pro-Trump tweets. Kardashian West clarified at the time that her husband doesn’t agree with everything Trump does.
Trump also thanked West for helping his approval rating among African-Americans in early May during the National Rifle Association’s annual legislative conference.
