Maryland Guard to send soldiers to Iraq

The Maryland National Guard is deploying 13 soldiers to a basic-training camp Monday to prepare them for missions in Iraq.

The guardsmen will head to Camp Shelby south of Hattiesburg, Miss., where they will join a battalion and fill in vacancies, guard officials said Friday.

There will be a deployment ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the National Guard’s Laurel armory at 8601 Odell Road.

The soldiers are part of the 58th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. More than 120 members of that team returned earlier this year after a yearlong deployment in Iraq.

None of the 13 soldiers deploying Monday were part of that returning unit, guard officials said.

The soldiers will join 376 other Maryland National Guardsmen already in Iraq. Most of the soldiers are in military police and medical units.

The Maryland Guard deployed 18 soldiers earlier this month to Afghanistan. In all, 461 Army and Air National Guardsmen from Maryland are currently deployed in domestic and international missions.
