A state lawmaker in Vermont introduced a bill that would allow drivers to express themselves with emojis on their license plates.
Democratic state Rep. Rebecca White introduced a bill that would permit residents to put one of six emojis on their license plates when registering vehicles in the state. It is not clear which emojis drivers would be able to choose from, but there are more than 3,000 emojis in existence, according to NBC 5.
If the bill passes and gets signed into law, it would make Vermont the first state to allow the often-humorous cartoon figures on license plates. The figures would not take the place of letters or numbers on the plates but would serve as a vanity feature.
“I guess it’s an OK idea. I wouldn’t say it’s good. I wouldn’t say it’s bad. It’s not hurting anybody,” said Pam Buck of Weathersfield, Vermont.
Queensland, Australia, passed similar legislation in 2019 that allows the emojis to appear on license plates for a steep $336 each, though the Vermont bill does not include a potential price for the additions.
