A CSX train struck a garbage truck stalled on its tracks early Friday in Gaithersburg, scuttling service on MARC trains on the Brunswick Line for about an hour, officials said.
No injuries were reported, said Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Capt. Oscar Garcia. The wreck occurred at about 6 a.m.
One track remained open Friday afternoon and the CSX train was allowed to continue to its destination. MARC transit authorities said service had resumed normal schedules, and they did not expect any delays in evening commutes. CSX and MARC trains share the same tracks.
Employees of Campbell’s Curbside Disposal, which owned the truck, spent much of Friday cleaning up debris, said Gaithersburg Police spokesman Rudy Wagner.
“It does smell bad down there,” Wagner said. “At least its not a real hot day because that would have been real bad.”
Police did not have the truck driver’s name but said he was able to get away from the truck on foot as the train approached.
A county hazardous materials crew spent more than seven hours cleaning up debris and draining about 80 gallons of fluid from the truck, which was leaking, Garcia said.
“The concern was once this truck was uprighted, we were going to have a lot more fluid on the ground,” Garcia said.
A CSX spokesman did not return a phone call.
