Trey Gowdy once had a 30-minute conversation with Bono about Jesus

Outgoing Rep. Trey Gowdy said he and Bono, the lead singer of the band U2, once had a 30-minute conversation about Jesus Christ.

The South Carolina Republican, who is retiring from office, was telling WYFF, an NBC affiliate in Greenville, S.C., about the most fascinating people he met while serving in Congress. He said Bono was the “most charismatic” person he has met, other than his wife.

“The last time he was there we spent 30 minutes talking about Jesus,” Gowdy said. “So if you had told me that I would spend 30 minutes talking to the front man of the world’s greatest rock and roll band about Jesus I would have said, ‘probably not.’ But we did.”

Gowdy also marveled how Bono could be friends with the late conservative Sen. Jesse Helms from North Carolina and also former President Barack Obama.

Gowdy said Bono was the No. 1 person on his list of people to meet while in office. During his tenure Gowdy met Bono three times and he credited Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., for making the connection happen.

Gowdy was elected to serve South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District in 2010. He has been chairman of a number of high-powered committees, including Oversight. He also was in charge of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, which investigated the events surrounding the 2012 terror attacks.

He will reportedly rejoin his old law firm, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, as a white-collar defense attorney after he leaves office Thursday.
