House Dems lack Senate sponsor for Electoral College floor fight

House Democrats hoping to launch a fight on the House floor Friday over the Electoral College certification have yet to find a senator needed to advance the challenge.

“I don’t believe that there is a senator that is participating,” Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said Friday. “If you have a senator and a House member, you can go forward, but if you don’t you can’t. I don’t believe they have that.”

Pelosi then added, “I don’t know who will show up and object, probably someone will.”

A group of House Democrats said they plan to challenge certification of Trump’s Electoral College victory, which will take place Friday afternoon during a joint session of Congress. But to challenge the vote, a senator would have to join in, and none has publicly committed to doing so.

Pelosi said she supports the effort and that the joint session should “have a discussion” about Trump’s victory and Russian interference in the election process.

“I’m not encouraging them,” Pelosi said. “It’s not going to have an impact at the end of the day. Donald Trump will be elected president by virtue of the Electoral College.”
