Cory Booker raises more than $5M in first quarter of 2020 White House race

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., raised more than $5 million during the first three months of this year, his presidential campaign announced Sunday.

The haul puts Booker behind several other rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Booker said the bid was going well because the totals beat his campaign’s own fundraising expectations. “I feel incredible. We set goals for ourselves and we surpassed our own goals, we’re seeing incredible energy and enthusiasm everywhere we go in this campaign,” he said in an email to supporters, adding that the campaign had roughly $6 million in cash on hand.

Rivals for the Democratic nod have raised significantly larger sums.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., pulled in $18 million over the same period. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., raised $12 million. South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg raised $7 million since announcing his presidential bid in January. Former Texas Democratic congressman Beto O’Rourke’s presidential campaign said Wednesday it raised more than $9 million.

Booker has roughly 3.2% support, putting him in sixth place among a crowded field of candidates vying for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, according to RealClearPolitics’ average of polls.
