Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., announced Thursday she will try to unseat Sen. Jeff Flake in 2018.
“I want to do more for my country,” she said in a video announcing her candidacy.
“It’s time to put our country ahead of party, ahead of politics,” said Sinema, the first openly bisexual candidate to win a seat in the House. “It’s time to stop fighting and look for common ground. It’s time for us to stand up and answer the call.”
“I’m running for the United States Senate because I’m not giving up on the American dream,” Sinema said.
Flake has been critical of President Trump, which already makes him vulnerable to a challenge on the right.
