GOP Rep.-elect George Santos has resume discrepancies: Report

Republican Rep.-elect George Santos may have misrepresented sections of his resume, according to a review of his public statements and documents.

CNN released a report on Monday saying it had reviewed Santos’s public statements on his education and employment history after the New York Times reported that some of his biography was either contradicted or not supported by evidence.

The outlet found that his biography lists education at Baruch College and New York University, earning degrees in finance and economics.

However, NYU spokesman John Beckman told CNN that “the university’s records do not reflect anyone with that name [George Anthony Devolder-Santos] having attended NYU.” Baruch College’s spokesperson could not find anyone with that name or birth date attending the college as well.

This information is also on his biography for the National Republican Congressional Committee website.

Santos’s income and financial disclosures raised some red flags, as well. He listed a salary of $750,000 from the Devolder Organization, a “family firm,” claimed Santos.

However, a search for the organization found it most recently temporarily deemed “inactive” by the state for failing to file required annual reports. He did not report any clients serviced by the organization in the financial disclosure, per CNN.

He also claimed that he ran and founded his own charity, Friends of Pets United, but no organization by that name could be found in the IRS database or in registered charities for either New York or Florida.

Santos did not respond to CNN or the New York Times for comment, but his attorney, Joseph Murray, said in a statement to CNN that the New York Times was looking to “smear” Santos with “defamatory allegations.”

“Santos represents the kind of progress that the Left is so threatened by — a gay, Latino, immigrant and Republican who won a Biden district in overwhelming fashion by showing everyday voters that there is a better option than the broken promises and failed policies of the Democratic Party,” Murray said.

Santos is set to represent a newly drawn district in New York that includes parts of Queens and some Long Island suburbs after he defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman in the 2022 midterm elections. He will join his fellow Republicans in securing a majority in the House of Representatives in the next Congress.
