Fetterman decries Oz and Mastriano as ‘power couple’ threatening abortion rights

Democratic candidate for Senate John Fetterman is firing up attacks against Republicans in Pennsylvania, accusing his GOP challenger Dr. Mehmet Oz of being part of a “power couple” with Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano and threatening abortion rights.

Fetterman denounced the two Republicans as being “too extreme and radical” for the state, claiming the pair wants to overturn abortion rights in the state. Abortion is legal in Pennsylvania up until 24 weeks, with exceptions for late-term procedures in the case of life-threatening conditions to the mother.

MASTRIANO SAID WOMEN WHO VIOLATE ABORTION BAN SHOULD FACE MURDER CHARGES IN 2019 INTERVIEW

“Pennsylvania has a new power couple of MAGA extremists. They’re MOZtriano,” Fetterman said in a video shared on his Twitter account. “They were married together by the Pennsylvania GOP, and they run together. … They both believe that abortion rights rest in them and not with women in Pennsylvania. Abortion is on the ballot, that’s the truth.”

Fetterman further accused his opponent of supporting “extreme” abortion policies, calling Oz a “joke. But it’s not very funny.”

“He believes that every abortion is a murder, and that means any woman that chose abortion must be a murderer themselves,” Fetterman said, referring to a 2019 radio interview in which Oz said abortion is considered murder at any stage of pregnancy. “And Dr. Oz used to make fun of having a stroke — that I might miss a word every now and then. Dr. Oz keeps missing words, and those words are ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ on [the question of] a national abortion ban.”

The Democratic candidate has previously criticized Oz for not giving a firm answer on whether he’d oppose a national abortion ban after one was proposed by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) last month. Oz’s campaign has maintained he is anti-abortion except for in the cases of rape, incest, or harm to the mother’s life — but the Republican candidate has stopped short of giving a yes or no answer.

However, he has indicated “he’d want to make sure that the federal government is not involved in interfering with the state’s decisions on the topic,” his campaign told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Fetterman also knocked Mastriano for not giving a straight answer on whether he’d back a federal abortion ban. Mastriano has come under fire for recently resurfaced comments that show he once said women who violate his previously proposed abortion ban should be charged with murder.

Abortion has taken center stage in the midterm elections after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court in June, returning the question of the procedure’s legality back to the individual states. The issue has become particularly central to the races in Pennsylvania as the future of abortion rights in the state could be determined depending on who wins the Senate and the governor’s mansion.
