President-elect Donald Trump tweeted that he appreciates the “passion” that the “small groups” protesting against his widely unexpected election victory have for America, hours after calling the protests “unfair.”
Trump, in a Friday morning tweet, said he loves “the fact that small groups of protesters have passion for our great country.”
Thousands turned out for a second night of protests in major cities like Baltimore, New York and Portland in another night of vocal disapproval of the president-elect.
Portland authorities declared a “riot” after demonstrators blocked traffic on a highway, clashed with police, smashed windows and lit fires. However, the number and size were down since Wednesday evening after President Obama and his successor met at the White House and promised to work together to ensure the peaceful transfer of power.
Trump had previously tweeted he thought the response was “unfair,” bashing “professional protesters” and the media before his more conciliatory Friday morning tweet.
Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!
