School bell delays D.C. pols arrival in Denver

With parties, floor speeches and plenty of other convention hubbub already going on, D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray wasn’t scheduled to arrive in Denver until Monday night. Gray, who’s also a delegate, wanted to wait until the first day of school was in the books before making the trip.

For his part, Mayor Fenty wound up burning up the frequent flyer miles thanks to the school bells. Fenty and Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee were in Denver on Sunday speaking at a panel discussion by the Democrats for Education Reform organization. Then it was back to D.C. late Sunday. Fenty was slated to fly back again on Monday night.

He and Gray will be joined by Councilmembers Harry Thomas, Yvette Alexander, Marion Barry and Jack Evans. Their schedule includes daily debriefings in the evenings, convention watch parties, and two voting rights events on Wednesday.
