Kathy Griffin to Trump: Take John McCain’s name ‘out of your mouth you piece of s–t’

Controversial comedian Kathy Griffin lashed out at President Trump late Saturday for his statement on Sen. John McCain’s death, calling attention to Trump’s antagonistic relationship with the Arizona Republican.

“Take his name out of your mouth you piece of shit,” Griffin, a staunch Trump critic, wrote on Twitter. “You maligned his military service while you did everything to avoid serving. You attacked him repeatedly while you knew he was dying. And you cozied up to Putin while he did everything he could to oppose him. Fuck You.”

Trump has been widely criticized for claiming in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election that McCain, who was held as a prisoner of war for five years during the Vietnam War after declining an opportunity for early release, was “not a war hero.” He has also belittled McCain for voting against GOP efforts in 2017 to to pass a “skinny” Obamacare repeal during a dramatic late-night Senate vote.

The White House did not comment last week when McCain’s family went public with the longtime senator’s decision to discontinue treatment for glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. But Trump did convey his “deepest sympathies and respect” to the McCains in a tweet Saturday after his passing.

“My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!” Trump wrote.

McCain died on Saturday at the age of 81.
