Bernie Sanders’ 2016 campaign manager says he’s ‘considering’ 2020 presidential run

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is “considering” mounting another presidential bid in 2020, his former campaign manager said.

Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ 2016 manager and senior adviser, told C-SPAN’s Washington Journal on Tuesday that the independent senator hadn’t ruled out another run for the White House.

“Nationally, he is considering another run for the presidency,” Weaver said. “When the time comes, I think we’ll have an answer to that, but right now, he’s still considering it.”

Sanders announced last week he would seek a third term in the Senate and vowed to be the “fiercest opponent” of President Trump and Republican leadership in the upper chamber.

The Vermont senator challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and drew more than 1.5 million supporters at his campaign events. Sanders was especially popular among young voters, having won more votes from people under 30 than Clinton and Trump combined, according to the Washington Post.

Weaver told USA Today that he believes Sanders would be the best candidate to defeat Trump during the next presidential election.

“He brings a lot of new voters into the process,” he said. “He is also incredibly strong with independent voters.”
