Chelsea Clinton open to idea of ‘children’s summit’ with Trump kids

Chelsea Clinton said she would be willing to meet with Donald Trump’s children to discuss the rhetoric and tone of the 2016 presidential campaign.

The daughter of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said on NBC News Thursday morning that the idea of meeting with Ivanka Trump — who is a friend of hers — or Trump’s other children is something that hadn’t occurred to her, “but it’s certainly something I’d consider.”

“I think it was clear last week when Ivanka introduced her dad that she’s so proud of him,” Clinton explained. “I hope it will be kind of at least as clear why I’m so proud of my mom when I introduce her here in Philadelphia.

“And yet clearly Ivanka and I have different views about who we think should be our president and who we think best represents our country,” Clinton added.

Clinton was then asked if she would, in a meeting with Trump’s children, address the GOP nominee’s comments regarding “some of the darkest moments of your family’s past as an issue.”

“Well, I don’t expect [Ivanka Trump] to always have to defend her father,” Clinton responded. “I mean, I think it’s clear that Mr. Trump is running his campaign and saying what he thinks is important in this election. I think what we’re seeing here in Philadelphia is a very strong contrast to that.”

Chelsea said her mother, unlike Trump, “is not engaging in divisive, bigoted rhetoric.”

Chelsea Clinton will introduce her mother before her acceptance speech Thursday night.
