President Trump intends to nominate Judge Amul Thapar, a judge who made it onto his campaign-era shortlist of potential Supreme Court nominees, to the Sixth Circuit appeals court, the White House announced on Tuesday.
Thapar presently sits on the District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, and was reportedly among the four finalists Trump considered nominating to fill the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat on the Supreme Court before selecting Judge Neil Gorsuch.
Trump released a list of Supreme Court contenders last summer, and promised on the campaign trail to choose someone from the list of conservative-leaning jurists if he won the presidency.
Trump has dozens of judicial appointments to make as he continues the process of filling his administration with his own people.
