Rubio kicks off re-election bid with $2 million haul in 9 days

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio has raised more than $2 million in the nine days since he announced his Senate re-election bid, scrapping previous plans to become a private citizen come January.

According to his campaign, the Florida Republican brought in $2.1 million between June 22-30 from thousands of donors across the Sunshine State and elsewhere.

Rubio’s campaign said his impressive fundraising haul was due in part to the enthusiastic endorsements of conservative leaders in Florida and Washington.

“Given their overwhelming show of support and Marco’s national fundraising network, the Rubio for Senate campaign has proven to have the necessary resources to quickly put together a successful campaign,” the campaign said in a statement.

Rubio, whose unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination ended with his defeat in Florida’s March 15 primary, decided to seek a second term in the Senate shortly after the Orlando shooting took place last month.

He has since participated in a slew of fundraisers, including one that was supposed to be held in Miami on Friday alongside Donald Trump. The event was later cancelled due to the Dallas shooting.
