Daily Wire host: Voting is not ‘God-given right’ to be shared by all people

A Daily Wire host said conservatives should reject left-wing arguments that voting should be a permitted ability among those who “contribute nothing of substance” to society.

During his Monday podcast, Matt Walsh, a Daily Wire conservative commentator with a significant online following and a public speaker with the Young America’s Foundation, said voting should be reassessed as a privilege for those who have a stake in society and are reasonably aware of their political environment.

“Voting ought to be a privilege reserved for informed, grown-up, contributing members of society. If you aren’t paying taxes, then you shouldn’t have any say in where tax money, other people’s money, goes. And if you are woefully ignorant of even the most basic facts of our system, then you shouldn’t be able to — by wandering into a voting booth, or worse, by mail from your home — muddy the waters by randomly casting a ballot ignorantly, with no idea of what you’re even doing,” Walsh said.

Walsh said voting shouldn’t be restricted on immutable characteristics, such as race or sex, and said all people should have the right to protest. However, he asserted certain behaviors of people he calls “noncontributing ignoramuses” warrant voting restrictions.

“Voting is not a God-given right, endowed by the creator, and meant to be shared by all people, no matter what. We already restrict voting based on several factors, and not all factors that actually a person can change. As it stands right now, if you’re 7 years old, you can’t vote. If you’re a convicted serial killer, you can’t vote,” Walsh continued, criticizing activists who wish to expand voting abilities to those groups of people.

“If we’re going to be talking about problems with our voting system, rather than focusing all the time on voter fraud, voter fraud, voter fraud, I think this is the real sort of fraud that’s been perpetuated on our system. And we should be talking about it,” the host concluded.
