David Copperfield to discuss magic with lawmakers

Magician David Copperfield will meet with lawmakers and their staffs on Thursday to discuss a House resolution aimed at recognizing magic as a “valuable art form and national treasure.”

The meeting, hosted by House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions, R-Texas, will discuss the resolution he introduced back in March.

Sessions’ resolution says magic lets people “experience the impossible,” and is also a form of therapy for kids with physical, psychological and social disabilities.

“[L]earning magic through programs such as Project Magic can help these children improve their physical and mental dexterity and increase their confidence,” his resolution stated.

But his resolution also laments that magic “has not been properly recognized as a great American art form, nor has it been accorded the institutional status on a national level commensurate with its value and importance.”
