Utah gubernatorial candidates release joint PSA saying they will accept election outcome

Utah’s gubernatorial candidates issued a harmonious public service announcement on Tuesday.

Chris Peterson, the Democratic nominee, and Republican Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox filmed a socially distanced joint PSA showing civility toward one another and encouraging Utahans to set an example for the country.

“There are some things we both agree on,” Cox said in the ad after both politicians encouraged people to vote for them. Peterson added, “We can debate issues without degrading each other’s character.”

In a second PSA video, Peterson said, “Our common values transcend our political differences, and the strength of our nation rests on our ability to see that.”

“We are both equally dedicated to the American values of democracy, liberty, and justice for all people,” Cox added.

In the second ad, the candidates addressed the presidential election, implicitly referring to President Trump’s repeated refusals to confirm unequivocally that he will accept the results of the election.

“Whether you vote by mail or in person, we will fully support the results of the upcoming presidential election, regardless of the outcome,” Peterson added, before Cox continued, “We are both committed to American civility and a peaceful transition of power.”

Utah’s two-term governor, Gary Herbert, declined to seek a third term in office. Cox is heavily favored to win the race, according to the Cook Political Report.
