Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa., said Monday that President Trump would spark a political catastrophe if special counsel Robert Mueller is fired amid his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

“It would be a self-destructive act to do that and it would set off a political crisis if he were to fire Mueller,” Dent told CNN’s “New Day.”

Dent said he’s introduced a bill in the House to protect Mueller. A bipartisan group of senators last week introduced a bill that would prevent Trump from firing the special counsel.

“I do believe that we need to protect the special prosecutor. It would be a terrible mistake for the president to fire him,” Dent said. “It would be bad for the president. It would be bad for Republicans in Congress in the midterms. And most of all, it would be bad for the American people.”

Trump has attacked the investigation as a “witch hunt.”
