THE 3-MINUTE INTERVIEW: Melissa Kadish

Kadish is a spokeswoman for ZERO – the Project to End Prostate Cancer. ZERO hosts the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge in D.C. The DASH4DAD race starts at 8:30 a.m. June 17 at Pentagon Row. Runners can register online at greatprostatecancerchallenge.com/races/dc. What is D4D’s mission?

The mission of the D.C. DASH4DAD and ZERO’s larger event series — the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge — is to raise awareness of prostate cancer in the local community and raise funds for research and testing. ZERO wants to create Generation ZERO — the first generation of men free from prostate cancer.

What does it mean to you to be involved in D4D?

The message we’re sending is very important: Prostate cancer will take the lives of more than 28,000 fathers, sons, brothers and friends this year. I’m proud to be involved in a race that increases awareness and urges men to get tested and make their health a priority.

Is there anyone in your life you are supporting/thinking of when you help with D4D?

I’m lucky that none of the men in my life have prostate cancer, because one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease. At ZERO, we work with a wonderful group of advocates who are dedicated to ending the disease. At the races, we celebrate those who have won their fight with prostate cancer, and we remember those who are no longer with us.

What do you and D4D most want to accomplish with the run?

Father’s Day is a day to celebrate dads, and the DASH4DAD race is a great way to reach men and their families, educate them on the risks of prostate cancer and remind them to take care of their health. The proceeds from the race will fund research for a cure and help us test men who are at risk for prostate cancer.
