Potomac Mills J.C. Penney outlet closing

The J.C. Penney outlet store in the Potomac Mills Mall is closing as part of a company-wide shuttering of its outlet stores, affecting thousands of employees nationwide. The company is laying off 103 people in Woodbridge as a result of the closing.

The company noted in its annual report earlier this year it planned to wind down its outlet and catalog business, as part of its move to eliminate underperforming business ventures. The cut is expected to save J.C. Penney $25 million to $30 million in 2012.

“These steps are part of an ongoing process to ensure we are increasing sales productivity and tightly managing costs and expenses,” the report said.

According to the company’s filing with the Virginia Workforce notification log, the outlet store will close by July 4.
