The White House took aim at the Republican-led Congress on Friday, saying the “endgame” for President Trump’s frequent attacks against GOP senators is for Congress to “do its job and actually pass legislation.”
“It’s clear that the end game is for Congress to do its job and actually pass legislation,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters at the press briefing Friday. “I think the American people are very frustrated with Congress’s lack of action, and for years they’ve been all talk and no action. And we’re looking for them to step up at this point.”
Sanders was asked about whether Trump’s criticisms of Republican senators jeopardize his ability to move his legislative agenda forward, especially given the slim majority the GOP has in the Senate.
In the last month alone, Trump has leveled attacks at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
Trump’s most recent criticism of a GOP lawmaker came Friday morning, when the president signaled on Twitter that Corker had privately asked Trump whether he should seek re-election in 2018.
“Strange statement by Bob Corker considering that he is constantly asking me whether or not he should run again in ’18. Tennessee not happy!” Trump tweeted Friday, referencing comments Corker made about the president’s competency last week.
