SAN DIMAS, Calif. (AP) — A beloved bronze statue of two boys trying to catch a leaping frog has been stolen from a fountain outside City Hall in San Dimas.

The Los Angeles Times reports (http://lat.ms/1ntrNb0) that the statue was stolen in two pieces over two nights.

City officials first noticed the frog was missing on Wednesday. The next night, the two boys were stolen.

Authorities say the thief or thieves likely wanted the sculpture to sell as scrap metal.

The piece by sculptor Vic Riesau is valued at $25,000 and was donated to the city in 1998.

Theresa Burns, the city’s parks and recreation director, says everyone loved the sculpture and the theft has destroyed a sense of community and pride.
