Florida, Conn. in for hefty Obamacare hike

Florida and Connecticut Obamacare enrollees can expect to pay double-digit hikes for their plans next year, the latest states to experience hikes.

Florida insurance officials announced on Friday a 19 percent average hike for Obamacare plans. Connecticut announced hikes for more than 20 percent for some individual market plans.

An analysis from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation shows that Humana plans on the exchanges will have the biggest increase, with a 36 percent hike for 2017.

The insurer with the smallest increase was Health First with 11 percent.

Florida and Connecticut are the latest states to announce higher premiums for 2017. A recent analysis from consulting firm Avalere Health found that average premiums for the silver plan, the middle tier plan choice, will rise more than 20 percent in 2017.

Rates for 2017 are trickling in across the country, with other states experiencing higher prices. Tennessee last month, for instance, announced rate hikes up to 62 percent for 2017.

The Obama administration has countered the high price hikes by noting that prices are still below what they were before the Affordable Care Act took effect.

“Consumers in Florida will continue to have affordable Health Insurance Marketplace options next year,” said John Gold, press secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services. “Among Marketplace consumers, most will be able to select a plan for less than $75 per month.”

Gold added that rate changes don’t reflect what consumers actually pay because tax credits can reduce the cost of coverage below the sticker price.
