Gary Cohn, President Trump’s chief economic adviser and a praciticing Jew, is “disgusted” and “deeply upset” at the president’s response to the violent rally in Charlottesville, Va., organized by white nationalist groups.
The New York Times reported Wednesday about Cohn’s feelings towards Trump’s remarks.
Cohn, the director of the president’s National Economic Council, was present at the Tuesday press conference at Trump Tower where Trump said there were “fine people” amongst the individuals protesting with white supremacist groups in Charlottesville.
Cohn has not publicly expressed his disapproval with Trump’s comments.
The violent Charlottesville rally began as white nationalists protested against the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park in the city.
But it also included displays of racism and anti-Semitism as neo-Nazi protestors chanted “Jews will not replace us” as they marched through the University of Virginia campus on Friday.
On Tuesday, Chris Cantwell, a white supremacist leader, told Vice News he wanted a president who “does not give his daughter to a Jew,” criticizing Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, for her marriage to Jared Kushner, who is Jewish.
Ivanka Trump converted to Orthodox Judaism and she has been the most vocal of the Jewish leaders in the White House to condemn the actions of white supremacists in Charlottesville.
“There should be no place in society for racism, white supremacy and neo-Nazis,” she said in a tweet Sunday.
