DHS secretary cancels China visit after Orlando shooting

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has cancelled an upcoming trip Beijing, choosing to remain in the U.S. to deal with the aftermath of a deadly mass shooting in Orlando, Fla.

Johnson and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch were slated to arrive in Beijing on Monday for a summit on cybersecurity with Chinese officials. Lynch has not yet signaled plans to cancel her own travel plans to the country.

Johnson has been briefed on the investigation into the shooting and will continue to work with local law enforcement authorities and FBI officials as further developments emerge.

Authorities are investigating the overnight shooting by 29-year-old Omar Mateen as a possible act of terror, considering Mateen was believed to have had leanings toward radical Islamic extremism and may have previously pledged allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization.
