COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Emergency shelters in Colorado Springs can accommodate only a fraction of the more than 32,000 residents ordered to evacuate ahead the Waldo Canyon fire, but the Red Cross says most people who evacuate stay with family and friends.
The Red Cross opened a fifth shelter in Colorado Springs to accommodate a new round of evacuees Wednesday. Spokeswoman Patricia Billinger says about 300 people stayed at the four Colorado Springs-area shelters Tuesday night.
Billinger says some evacuees book hotel rooms, which their insurance companies may cover.
Many hotels in Colorado Springs and Denver are booked for Wednesday night, but it’s not clear how many of those guests are evacuees.
