WHO says 70 vaccines for coronavirus are in development

The World Health Organization announced that over 70 vaccines for the coronavirus are in development, with three currently being tested on people.

Two U.S. biotechnology companies, Moderna Inc. and Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc., and one Chinese company, CanSino Biologics Inc., are testing their treatments in clinical trials on humans, according to the WHO. Potential vaccines from another 67 companies are in preclinical evaluation.

Researchers are aiming to have a vaccine on the market within a year, a process that typically takes 10-15 years, as the world continues to grapple with the pandemic.

Of those tested for the coronavirus, over 1.9 million people have proven positive across every continent except Antarctica. At least 121,000 have died from the virus, and more than 565,000 have recovered.

In the United States, there have been at least 584,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, with nearly 3 million people being tested. Twenty-three thousand and seven hundred deaths and 44,300 recoveries were also reported, according to the latest reading of the Johns Hopkins University tracker.
