Protesters attack Trump supporters outside San Jose rally

A rally for Donald Trump in San Jose, Calif. turned violent Thursday evening when protesters attacked Trump supporters leaving the event.

Trump supporters were taunted, punched and pelted with eggs as they exited the convention center where the presumptive Republican nominee had just finished speaking, according to multiple media reports.

Some protesters swiped “Make America Great Again” hats from attendees and burned them. Others reportedly surrounded and shouted at an elderly couple.

John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair, said “violence against supporters of any candidate has no place in this election,” according to NBC.

Trump spent Thursday evening lashing out at Clinton hours after she opened new lines of attack against him in a speech that her team billed as a foreign policy address.

Police reportedly arrested several of the violent protesters. One officer was assaulted in the chaos.

The San Jose rally was not the first Trump event to invite chaos. An event outside Los Angeles in late April saw 20 protesters arrested after the anti-Trump crowd smashed a police vehicle and blocked the streets. Another Trump rally in Chicago in March was cancelled in anticipation of violent protests.
