Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee took a shot at Republican John Kasich over his support for presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden over President Trump.
“John Kasich lied to the Republican Party,” Huckabee said on Fox News’s Outnumbered Overtime with Harris Faulkner. “He, like everyone else on that stage, including me, raised their hands, and we said we would support the nominee. He did not. Now, we didn’t just raise our hand. We actually signed documents,” he added, referring to the GOP primary fight in 2016 during which the Republican National Committee circulated a loyalty pledge.
Kasich, who, like Huckabee, competed against Trump for the nomination, says he wrote in Sen. John McCain for president that year.
This time around, Kasich, a former governor of Ohio, has decided to throw his support behind Biden, describing the decision as one he made with his “conscience.” Kasich argues he can hold onto his conservative values while still supporting Biden. Huckabee disagrees with that stance.
“John Kasich says he’s a Republican. He isn’t,” Huckabee said. “You cannot be a true Republican — you’re supposed to be pro-life. You should be against high taxes and for security and law and order — and go out and support Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. He has decided he doesn’t want to be a Republican.”
Kasich is slated to speak at the Democratic National Convention on Monday, a move Huckabee said he doesn’t expect to be “honest” given his open opposition to Trump while being in the same party.
“He’s got a lot of personal anxiety about Donald Trump,” Huckabee said. “It’s a real shame that he has taken his personal feelings and has set it aside with all the principles that he once claimed that he really, really adhered to.”
