Hine developers and neighbors still don’t see eye-to-eye

The team that’s redeveloping the old Hine Junior High School site near the Eastern Market is in the process of showing residents some of the changes they made to the massive site — but so far it doesn’t seem to be impressing anyone.

The development by Stanton-EastBanc is a little larger than one square block on Capital Hill and adjacent to the historic Eastern Market. At a city Historic Preservation Review Board meeting this spring, the main complaint from neighbors was that the development’s tallest building on Pennsylvania Avenue and Eighth Street was too intrusive. The HPRB members tended to agree and asked the developers, among other tweaks, to help mitigate that impact such as setting back the top floor, which makes the building appear shorter from the street.

But neighbors on a community listserv who have seen the new plans say they’re still not satisfied. A petition against the development is now circulating and many nearby residents say they feel the building in question doesn’t look any different.

The Advisory Neighborhood Commission is holding a special meeting on the development (again) Tuesday night.
