NEW YORK (AP) — The great-grandmother of a 7-year-old Brooklyn stabbing victim says the girl is recovering at home with the help of a teddy bear that sings “smile though your heart is aching.”
Regenia Trevathan told reporters Saturday that Mikayla Capers is still in a “fragile” state after she and 6-year-old P.J. Avitto were attacked June 1 in the elevator of their East New York building.
Avitto died from his wounds.
Trevathan says Capers needs time to heal from the trauma of 16 stab wounds and losing her friend.
Daniel St. Hubert was indicted last week on charges of second-degree murder and other crimes. Police say he’s being investigated in connection with two other recent attacks.
St. Hubert was released from prison May 23 after serving five years for attempted murder and assault.
