Two Republican senators are announcing their own healthcare bill Thursday that would send revenue from Obamacare’s taxes to states so they can use it to craft their own health plans.
The alternative approach from Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, first reported by CNN, would keep in place many of Obamacare’s taxes but send the revenue to states. The taxes that would be repealed are for medical device makers and the individual and employer mandates.
Graham told CNN he expects that about $500 billion in revenue would be sent to states, but is still awaiting confirmation for that amount.
It is not clear if there is much appetite for the proposal, which Graham has previously said he hopes will win bipartisan support.
The Senate GOP leadership is expected to release a revised version of its healthcare bill at a meeting today. A leaked outline of the new bill would provide an additional $70 billion to states to reduce premiums and keeps a tax on investments.
