Sports Illustrated published a glowing profile of transgender athlete Lia Thomas, a biological male who has dominated women in collegiate swimming.
“I’m a woman, just like anybody else on the team,” Thomas, who swims on the women’s team at the University of Pennsylvania, said.
Thomas has become a subject of controversy, as many point out the unfairness of a biological male who enjoys several physical advantages over women competing against them.
To critics, Thomas had this to say: “The very simple answer is that I’m not a man.”
“I’m a woman, so I belong on the women’s team. Trans people deserve that same respect every other athlete gets.”

Discussing the swimmer’s new name, Thomas said, “I am Lia,” adding that being transgender is “an amazing and beautiful experience.”

According to Sports Illustrated, the Division I swimmer has aspirations beyond collegiate swimming and wants to swim in the 2024 Olympic trials. Thomas further told the magazine, “I just want to show trans kids and younger trans athletes that they’re not alone.”
“They don’t have to choose between who they are and the sport they love.”
Last month, Gov. Kristi Noem of South Dakota signed a bill to limit women’s sports only to biological women. “An Act to protect fairness in women’s sports” was officially signed into law on Feb. 3.
