McAuliffe Unsure About Donor He’s Reportedly Met Three Times

The FBI and Department of Justice are investigating Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe for receiving potentially illegal political donations. Among them is the $120,000 he received from Chinese businessman Wang Wenliang.

McAuliffe has been going back and forth on how well he knows Wenliang and whether or not the two ever met.

During an interview on Wednesday, McAuliffe referred to him as “Mr. Wong,” and said he’s only met him “once or twice,” but he’s “not exactly sure.” He also called Wenliang an “upstanding individual” and denied having personal ties to him.

However, McAuliffe wondered in an interview on Tuesday if he’s ever met Wenliang. “I’m not even sure if I’ve ever met the person.”

Other reports make clear that the two did meet. The New York Times reports the two did meet at a dinner in 2012. Time also reports McAuliffe not only knows Wenliang, but invited him over to Hillary Clinton’s house for a fundraiser.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe invited the Chinese businessman whose donations to him have been named as a focus of Justice Department investigators to a 2013 fundraiser at Hillary Clinton’s personal Washington, D.C., residence. … The fundraiser was one of at least three interactions between Wang and McAuliffe, according to the businessman’s representative.

McAuliffe was co-chairman of President Bill Clinton’s 1996 campaign, chairman of Hillary’s 2008 campaign, and served as a board member of the Clinton Global Initiative. His role in the latter is under scrutiny by investigators.
