Leaders on the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday said President Trump’s tweets from last week aren’t enough of a response to their questions about whether Trump has any documents or other materials detailing his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey.
Trump in May indicated over Twitter that he might have “tapes” of those conversations. When the committee asked for tapes, documents and other materials, Trump tweeted on June 22 that he had “no idea” if there are any tapes, and sent a letter to the committee saying that statement was the administration’s full answer.
But Reps. Mike Conaway, R-Texas, and Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said a few tweets isn’t enough.
“By only referring to the president’s statement, the White House’s letter stops short of clarifying for the committee whether the White House has any responsive recordings, memoranda, or other documents,” they said in a statement. “Today’s letter from the Committee makes clear that should the White House not to respond fully, the committee will consider using compulsory process to ensure a satisfactory response.”
While the committee is seeking Comey documents from the White House, if they exist, they’ve also been seeking the memos Comey admitted to keeping of his conversations with the president.
